This Read Me document provides information about your LaserWriter Pro 600 and Laserwriter Pro 630 that is not covered in the user’s guide. You may want to print this Read Me document and keep it for future reference.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE USING PHOTOGRADE WITHIN A PROGRAM
Some application programs override the PhotoGrade feature. If you have trouble
using PhotoGrade within a program, try these possible solutions:
• Select the Use Printer Defaults option if the program has one.
• If the program allows you to control the line screen settings used when
printing a document, change the settings to 106 lines and 45 degrees.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE SELECTING 600 DPI OR PHOTOGRADE
The LaserWriter driver version 7.2 provides the capability to enable or disable FinePrint and PhotoGrade. There will be cases when there is not enough memory for the LaserWriter Pro to honor the request for 600 dpi or PhotoGrade. When this occurs, the LaserWriter Pro automatically falls back to 300 dpi or turns PhotoGrade off, whichever is appropriate to provide the best possible rendering quality.
If you have a LaserWriter Pro 600 and want to print using the PhotoGrade feature,
Apple recommends upgrading the base memory from 4 MB to 8 MB.
IF YOU SEE MESSAGES ABOUT NEEDING MORE MEMORY
There may be times (when you are printing complex pages with multiple fonts and/or complex graphics) when the printer does not have enough memory to print the page. In those cases you will see a “VMerror” or “limitcheck” PostScript error in the print status dialog box of your Macintosh or (if background printing is turned on) in the Print Monitor status window. These error messages simply mean that the printer doesn't have enough memory to print the job.
There are several things you can do to reduce the memory requirements of your
document:
• Reduce the number of fonts used in your document.
• Use the fonts built into the printer rather than downloaded fonts. (You can
use the LaserWriter Utility to find out which fonts are built into the
printer.)
• Turn off Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in the Options dialog box (chosen from
the Page Setup dialog box).
• Turn off the Text Smoothing and Graphic Smoothing options in the Page Setup
dialog box.
CONNECTING A SCSI HARD DISK TO A LASERWRITER PRO 630
When you attach a SCSI hard drive, the SCSI bus must be terminated by an Apple SCSI Cable Terminator II (Black), part number 590-0705. Using other Apple SCSI terminators or non-Apple SCSI terminators can produce unpredictable behavior. Also, some non-Apple SCSI hard disks have internal terminators. These internal terminators must be removed and the recommended external Apple terminator installed for proper operation.
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE CONNECTING NON-APPLE HARD DISKS
If you have connected a non-Apple hard disk to your LaserWriter Pro 630 and the printer does not recognize the hard disk (that is, the hard disk is not mentioned on the startup page that is printed when you turn on the printer), follow these steps:
1. Turn off the printer and all hard disks connected to it.
2. Turn on all the hard disks and wait at least 10 seconds for them to “spin
up” to full speed.
3. Turn on the printer and wait for it to initialize itself and print a startup page.
(The startup page will probably still not indicate any non-Apple hard disks
that are connected.)
4. Turn the printer off and then on, and wait for it to initialize itself again.
(This time, the startup page should indicate that all the non-Apple hard
disks are connected.)
If the printer still does not recognize a non-Apple hard disk, then the disk needs to be initialized. Use the LaserWriter Utility to identify and initialize any non-Apple hard disks that the printer does not recognize.
INFORMATION ABOUT SCSI ID NUMBERS AND COMMUNICATIONS SETTINGS
The SCSI identification number assigned to all LaserWriter Pro 630 printers
is 6. Make sure that no hard disk attached to the printer has been assigned
this SCSI ID number. (Each SCSI device must have a unique ID number.)
The numbers in the Configure Communications dialog box (chosen from the
Utilities menu) represent communications settings, not SCSI ID numbers.
For more information about SCSI ID numbers and about communications settings
available for the LaserWriter Pro 630, see your user’s guide.
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WHEN USING THE LASERWRITER UTILITY
If you use the LaserWriter Utility when a screen saver program or Balloon Help
is activated, your Macintosh may have problems redrawing the screen. The screen
will be redrawn once the LaserWriter Utility has completed its task.
If you use the LaserWriter Utility to set the Print Density, be aware that each unit of change causes a very subtle change in observable density. To make very noticeable changes in the print density, you need to make substantial changes in your print density selection.
IF FONT SELECTIONS IN YOUR MACWRITE II DOCUMENTS CHANGE
If you install the new fonts supplied with the LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630, you may find that old MacWrite II documents print with different fonts than were originally selected. To circumvent this problem, you can go into your old documents and reselect the desired fonts; or you can simply choose not to install the new fonts.
IF THE OPTIONAL ENVELOPE FEEDER IS NOT INSTALLED OR REMOVED PROPERLY
After you install or remove the optional envelope feeder, you must turn the LaserWriter Pro off and on again. The printer becomes aware of the presence or absence of the envelope feeder during the printer initialization phase.
If you do not turn the power off and on, the printer does not receive correct information about the paper handling system and the incorrect paper tray may be selected.
IF YOU USE VENTURA PUBLISHER WITH THE LASERWRITER PRO 630
If you use Ventura Publisher with a LaserWriter 630, your fonts may not scale properly. To solve this problem, you must select the LaserWriter driver from the Chooser, click the Setup button with option key pressed, and then manually select LaserWriter Pro 600.
